Brazen Bluntness: Laughing in the Face of Death

Islamic Radicals

Ziad Cattan, one of many former Iraqi defense ministry officials who fled the country and is wanted back in Baghdad on suspicion of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars. He says if he goes back, he’ll be killed.

Candor can be so refreshing.

Take the case of the self-exiled former Iraqi Defense Ministry official Ziad Cattan, who 60 Minutes recently caught up to. This man, who had absolutely no experience, ran military procurement, yet he was placed in the job by the top U.S. diplomat, Paul Bremer, after the fall of Saddam Hussein.

He was given a budget of $1.2 billion and $800 million of that reportedly disappeared; it’s unaccounted for.

Correspondent Steve Croft and his 60 Minutes crew caught up with the former Iraqi official.

According to Cattan, every bit of the money can be accounted for. That may be, but there’s no indication he’s anxious to go home to make his case. After all, as you heard, he can predict the outcome if he did return to Iraq. Click the Icon to play the video
